What is the plan for the size of the student body?
We like the family feel of a small school environment where all of the teachers and students know each other. Over the next few years, we look to grow to approximately 80 students. Long term, we plan for the school to grow to around 150 children across 4th-12th grades.
Can my twice-exceptional student apply?
Our definition of twice-exceptional is very broad and can range from auditory processing issues, to sensory integration sensitivities, to ADHD or other learning disabilities. Given the open, hands-on environment of Ideaventions Academy, we believe that our teaching methods may be the right educational environment for some twice-exceptional students or students that require more flexibility in their learning environments. This environment is not a good fit for students who struggle with motivation, self-directed settings, making choices, or require significant structure or supports.
Please note that our teachers are not licensed in special education nor have degrees in special education, nor are we a school focused on special education. It is a rigorous academic environment and all students are expected to be active participants in all classes, must be able to abide by our Honor Code, and be performing at or above grade level in all of our Academic subjects. All prior documentation and testing must be submitted as part of the application process for students who have ever had a diagnosed learning difference.
Is lunch included?
A nutritious lunch is available for purchase by the day.
How much homework should we expect? Is that enough?
Lower School: We believe in focusing on the quality of the homework and not on the quantity, and that a small amount of homework helps teach time-management skills. Homework causes too many headaches and stresses with families. We believe that if kids spend their time efficiently at school, then there should be very little work to do at home. In addition, when working with academically gifted children, the requirement for repetition is lessened and thus the need for extensive homework. Our expectation is homework will amount to roughly 3-5 hours per week (or less) and will support student projects and research. Students will be expected to plan their week and their work time, with the help of their teachers.
Upper School: In the Upper School, students are expected to work about six to 10 hours on each class per week, including in-class time over five classes (~40 hours per week). In-class time is about 20-hours per week and about 10 hours per week is built into the school day for work periods where outside-of class work (homework) can be completed.
What is Ideaventions Academy's philosophy on grades?
Lower School: Our goal is to see that students have mastered a subject area through projects, discussions and presentations, without the focus on a grade. In certain instances, we will use tests and quizzes to assess student or class mastery of the subject. We will use a combination of these outputs to determine the student's mastery of a subject.
Upper School: Once in the Upper School, students will be graded on a 4.0 grading scale. Grades are made up of demonstrated mastery of the material, quality of the work produced, effort and participation.
How does Ideaventions Academy define a 6th or 7th grader? Is it based on what level of curriculum they are doing? Or age?
We are generally defining a 6th or 7th grader as a child that is 11-12 or 12-13 years old, respectively. Children in the school are of varying degrees of giftedness, including highly and profoundly gifted students, and will be working on curriculum that is already advanced.
What is the cut-off date for a grade?
To apply for 4th grade (2022-2023 academic year), the student must have been born on or before November 30, 2013, and been in 3rd grade at their prior school. For 5th grade, the student must have been born on or before November 30, 2012 and been enrolled in 4th grade at their prior school, and so on. For children born in the late summer and fall, special consideration must be taken to ensure that they are emotionally ready for the next grade.
