Approach
Our English courses prepare students for college and careers using a progression of challenging and engaging literature, writing, and varied communication experiences and modes. Once completed, our students are able to precisely and effectively apply written and oral communication skills in a variety of environments and forms to achieve their goals.
Our English courses build knowledge and skills through a diverse, developmentally-shaped, meaningful curriculum that challenges students. We seek to understand and analyze great writers, interview community members and local leaders, delivery presentations and oral arguments, research and report on global issues, and edit publish technical writing. Through these varied experiences, we learn to appreciate, practice and apply different communication strategies and techniques.
Throughout our sequence, we focus on close-reading and close-listening skills and an ability to contextualize information to grow student abilities to analyze writing and literature. With a focus on listening and analyzing speech as well as speaking with clarity, confidence and technique, oral communication skills are steadily developed using varied situations and forms. Discussions, workshops, interviews, debates, films, presentations and talks provide ample practice with audiences, small to large, internal to external. The coursework design supports building and practicing adaptable speaking skills; students learn to tailor their speech to their target audience and goal.
At Ideaventions Academy, our English coursework produces literate and learned citizens who are skillful in communicating, whether at college or in their future life.
