Ryan Heitz, Founder and Head of School, Earth Science and Physics
Ryan’s career has spanned a range of fields, including environmental science, computer programming, Geographical Information Systems and education. A Northern Virginia native, Ryan’s interest in science bloomed at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Later, as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, Ryan’s environmental science research took him to the eastern shores of Virginia where he tested sediment flows to explore sea level rise. He was interested in a career in teaching, but decided to pursue science first. His graduate research in environmental science led him to Brazil where he built electronic systems from scratch. With the help of a NASA grant, Ryan ran an array of environmental tests with equipment that he built. He pried open Palm pilots, pieced together atmospheric sensors and designed protective housing units. The “Maker” in Ryan was fully born.
After graduate school, Ryan worked and managed GIS projects for more than a decade. He decided he wanted to start ideaventions® with his wife, Juliana, after teaching hands-on science with his son, Daniel, and other homeschooled students. He saw an opportunity to create a place where students had the freedom to really explore science, like he had in high school. “I wanted to create an environment where children could experiment and try different things,” he says. To this day, he still gets incredibly excited about the challenge and thrill of experimental design. “One of my favorite things in the world is designing an experiment,” he says.

Dr. Sarah Ciupek, Biology, Chemistry and Neuroscience
Sarah completed her PhD in neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas. There, she studied spatial navigation in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. She participated in a variety of teaching opportunities while she was there, such as leading breakout groups about medical science for high-school students on Saturday mornings, creating a boot camp for incoming neuroscience students, and leading labs as a Teaching Assistant for an undergraduate neuroscience course at Rice University. Now, she is excited to be using her science knowledge to teach the next generation at Ideaventions. She is also excited to be back on the East Coast, having grown up in Maryland and attained her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Outside of the classroom, Sarah is most likely to be found watching or participating in some form of the musical arts, such as playing the harp or singing a cappella. She also enjoys hanging out at the Smithsonian.

Dr. Alexandr Draganov, Advanced Math
Sasha grew up in the Soviet Union, with a limited access to computers. When you cannot rely on a computer, you have to compensate by honing your math and analytical techniques. Over the years, Sasha used these skills to do research and development in multiple fields, including applied mathematics, algorithm development, navigation, signal processing, and telecommunications. Sasha published over 40 papers, and presented at dozens of conferences. He holds five U.S. patents. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford and a Masters in Theoretical Physics from Kiev University, Ukraine. After retiring from a corporate career, Sasha is pivoting to teaching and writing.
Sasha loves books. He got hooked on reading while serving 2 years in the Soviet military in a small town, where a local library was the only source of entertainment. He remembers a jolt from reading first few pages of Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust on the steps to a radar cabin. Proust remains one of favorite authors, as are Leo Tolstoy and Robert Musil. A few years ago Sasha published a scholarly article in a refereed journal on the idea of virtue in Tolstoy’s work.

Johnny Dukovich, Engineering
Johnny grew up near Pittsburgh and studied electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He was on an ROTC scholarship and after graduation spent six years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force. While in the Air Force, he worked on technical projects such as the research, development, testing, and implementation of improvements to the F100 family of jet engines, used to power F-15 and F-16 aircraft. After moving to the DC area, Johnny was stationed at a joint Air Force/Navy program office where he worked on projects designed to improve the performance of Sidewinder air-to-air missiles. Johnny received his masters degree in engineering management and then began a career assessing the costs, benefits, feasibility, and risks of technical projects for the FAA, NASA, DOD, DOJ, and other government agencies -- both domestic and foreign.
His next career change centered on creating software systems to manage conferences and events for nonprofit organizations. Johnny then taught electronics, coding, and microcontroller workshops at the TechShop makerspace in Arlington, Virginia for several years. Johnny is also an artist and has had installations at Georgetown Glow and Artomatic events in Washington, DC. Johnny is an enthusiastic teacher and is delighted to be able to work with Ideaventions students as they explore engineering in an amazing hands-on environment.
