The most exciting part of the week was to be able to see the chalk lines and the spray paint on the cement that shows where the walls, doors and water lines are going to go. We were able to “step inside” the future classrooms and imagine what it would feel like inside, which is an amazing feeling.
The most surprising aspect of the start of construction was how calm the first day was. Since there’s very little demolition and the external structure is already there, Day 1 was very quiet as the lines got drawn on the cement. However, throughout the week, the pace has picked up significantly! The steel arrived and the front windows are being removed to make way for what will be the main door.
Shifting gears, we also received all of the feedback from the kids on the types of clubs and electives that they would like to see, as well as their thoughts on Foreign Languages. The purpose of reaching out to the kids and families was to help us narrow down the list of options.
Foreign Language Electives
Spanish and French tied with the most requests. German came in second, Japanese was third and Latin was fourth. As such, we will be offering Spanish and French next year.
The other interesting result of the survey was that students interested in taking a foreign language elective also said that they want to take other electives, even if it means only having the foreign language once per week. Based on this result, rather than our original plan of foreign language electives meeting twice weekly, we’re adjusting our plan based on the survey feedback. Recognizing that taking a language multiple times per week is best, with immersion being ideal. We also know that we have to make compromises as there is only a limited amount of time in the day. Taking a language once per week changes the approach of the lessons and therefore, we will have to make modifications to the plan we had, but we believe that the kids will have a good introduction to the language should they choose that as an elective class. They’ll also be able to take other electives they are interested in and they have helped shape the Academy through their input.
Other Electives & Clubs
We are still analyzing the data for the other Electives and Clubs and we’ll have the update early next week.
Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
