STEM Out of School Programs
Kids surprise us every day with what they know and what they understand. Why does that not translate to STEM? Through repeated exposure to vocabulary, the engineering design cycle and the scientific method through experimentation and hands-on activities, we hope to provide kids an opportunity to be challenged, learn something new, get things wrong (and start over and try again), and if their passion lies with STEM, to learn about themselves and have the opportunity to pursue those interests as they get older with kids that share that passion. As such, we have developed our curriculum based on their age-level as well as strand. All of our classes introduce above grade-level topics in a way that kids enjoy. We strongly believe in the relationship between the natural sciences, engineering, technology and math. As such, every class touches on all. Therefore, while we have separated our classes into "strands," the strand represents the primary focus of the class and is not mutually exclusive of the other strands.
Grade (or age) levels are intended as a general guideline. As our classes are designed to introduce above grade-level topics, the main considerations are the child's fine motor skills, maturity when handling equipment and problem solving skills. The vast majority of our kids are curious tinkerers or science-minded "experimenters."
We also overlap grade levels since we have seen many kids that are asynchronous learners. They may be working one or two grade levels above their chronological grade in math, but manually building an engineering structure is more difficult for them, or can be in third grade, reading at the middle school level, but only able to write at the second grade level. The labs are taught by our experienced leaders and feature our high quality equipment.
