Application Steps

We have limited availability for the upcoming academic year.

Domestic Students

Step 1. Pre-Application

a. Officially inquiry through Ravenna to receive the Ideaventions Academy pre-recorded Information Session video
b.
Attend an In-Person Parent Tour. See our school in action during a Parent-Only School Tour. Tours take approximately one hour. Register through Ravenna.

Step 2. Complete Application & submit $75 fee

We accept either Ravenna or the SAO (Standard Application Online).

a. Schedule IQ Testing (grades 3-11 applications). This is potentially the longest part of the process if you do not already have testing completed, as the turnaround time can be 4-8 weeks. Please schedule that now, while you complete the steps below. Testing must have been completed within the last three years of application submission. Beginning in the 2025-26 admissions cycle, the WPPSI-IV or the WISC-V, depending on the child's age, will be required for 1st and 2nd grade applicants.
b. Request Teacher Recommendations through Ravenna. Families should ask teachers in advance and then enter the email address of recommenders in Ravenna. Two recommendations are required from teachers (not parents) who have worked with the child in an educational capacity in the last year. For Middle & High School applicants, one must be from a humanities teacher and the other from a STEM teacher.
c. Submit writing sample. Lower and Middle School applicants should submit sample of student's best writing completed for school assignment. High School applicants should answer the following prompt: "Why do you think Ideaventions would be a good fit for you, and how do you think you would be a good fit for Ideaventions?" Essays found to be written by AI will be cause for an automatic denial of admission.
d. Submit Report Cards. Submit the most recent from this year, plus last two years end-of-year report cards. Unofficial copies are acceptable.
e. Learning Plans:
If your child has ever been tested for or diagnosed with a learning disability or difference, emotional difference (e.g., anxiety), and/or receives special services at their current school, we require the submission of all prior testing done as part of the application process, including any IEPs or 504 plans from their current school. Please note that we have limited ability to serve students with unique learning needs. Each application is handled on a case by case basis.

Step 3. Child Visit (by invitation only)

Once the above application materials are received, the Admissions Committee will meet to evaluate whether the candidate would have a successful educational experience at Ideaventions Academy, both academically and socially. Our acceptance rate is approximately 45%.

If we are unable to offer a visit day for the student, we will communicate the admissions decision to the family at this time. If the student does appear to be a fit for our community, we will invite them to spend the school day with us. This provides the faculty an opportunity to work with the student in an educational (and fun) capacity, as well as allow the student to experience our teaching model and environment.

Step 4. Parent Interview (by invitation only)

If the student's application and visit indicate they would be a good fit for our school, the school will invite the parents for a meeting to discuss educational philosophy and goals and answer any questions.

Admissions decisions will be made within one week following the parent meeting.

International Students

Ideaventions Academy is in the final phase of being certified to provide I-20s for students accepted to our school. We expect final approval in the Spring of 2025. We are accepting applications for students residing with their parents or other legal guardian in Virginia for the 2025-26 academic school year.

Step 1. Officially inquiry through Ravenna, and receive the Ideaventions Information Session video.

Step 2. Attend an online information session.

Step 3. Complete an Online Application Form & submit $150 fee

You may use either Ravenna or the SAO (Standard Application Online).

Step 4. Schedule Interview for English Proficiency Verification

  • Students for whom English is not their first language must provide verification of English skills. Students from mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan must complete testing through Vericant. This also fulfills the interview requirement.
  • Students from other countries may submit TOEFL results and schedule an online interview with our Admission Office.

Step 5. Schedule IQ Testing (grades 3-11 applications)

  • Applying for 1st or 2nd grade? Please skip to Step 5 below.
  • IQ testing is potentially the longest part of the process if you do not already have testing completed, as the turnaround time can be 4-8 weeks. Please schedule that now, while you complete the steps below. Review the testing information for accepted tests and recommended centers.
  • Testing must have been completed within three years of applying for admission.

Step 6. Request Teacher Recommendations

  • Families should ask teachers in advance and then enter the email address of recommenders in Ravenna or SAO.
  • 2 recommendations are required from teachers (not parents) who have worked with the child in an educational capacity in the current academic year.
    • Middle & High School applicants: one must be from a humanities teacher, and the other must be from a STEM teacher.

Step 7. Complete your Application

To be considered for the visit, all application materials must be received. The preferred application deadline is Friday, January 17, 2025, by 5 pm EST. Applications are accepted after that date as space allows.

A complete application consists of the following:
1. Application Form
2. English proficiency results: Results of Vericant (students from Mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan only). Students from other countries may submit their TOEFL results.
3. Report Cards (Most recent from this year, plus last two years end-of-year report cards. Unofficial copies acceptable.)
4. Testing results
  • IQ testing for grades 3-11 required
  • For all grades: If your child has ever been tested for or diagnosed with a learning disability or difference, emotional difference (e.g., anxiety), and/or receives special services at their current school, we require the submission of all prior testing done as part of the application process, including any IEPs or 504 plans from their current school.
5. Teacher recommendations
6. Writing sample:
  • Lower and Middle School applicants: Submit sample of student's best writing completed for school assignment.
  • High School applicants: Answer the following prompt: "Why do you think Ideaventions would be a good fit for you, and how do you think you would be a good fit for Ideaventions?"
